What is QuickSSL?
QuickSSL is a web server certificate that allows consumers and web sites to conduct safe e-commerce with encrypted SSL connections. QuickSSL web server certificates are compatible with 98% of all browsers.

What is SSL?
The SSL (secure socket layer) protocol is the web standard for encrypting communications between users and web sites. Data sent via an SSL connection is protected by encryption, a mechanism that prevents eavesdropping and tampering with any transmitted data. SSL provides businesses and consumers with the confidence that private data sent to a web site, such as credit card numbers, are kept confidential. Web server certificates are required to initialize an SSL session.

Why are QuickSSL web server certificates so inexpensive?

Historically, most SSL certificates cost $350 or more, but GeoTrust has developed fully automated systems to verify that a certificate purchaser has appropriate administrative rights to a web server's domain. This greatly lowers our costs for issuing QuickSSL certificates, and we pass those savings on to you. With QuickSSL, you can assure your customers that their transactions and information are secure on the Internet without having to pay an unreasonable price.

What web browser programs are compatible with QuickSSL?

QuickSSL is compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer® 5.01 and higher and Netscape/AOL web browsers version 4.51 and higher, comprising an estimated 98% or more of all web browsers in use today. All other commonly used browsers may connect securely with web servers using QuickSSL certificates. However, some older browsers may display a dialogue box indicating that the certificate is not trusted. This means that the certificate is not located in the browser certificate store and, in most cases, the user will be prompted to install it with a few clicks of their mouse.

Can you tell me more about the Certificate Signing Request (CSR)?
It's the most important step in obtaining an SSL certificate. The Certificate Signing Request (CSR) contains information about your organization and the domain you wish to secure. The CSR is normally generated for you by your hosting provider. Some control panels (Ensim, Plesk) will allow you to generate your own CSR if your hosting provider has enabled that feature for you.

Each and every CSR generated is UNIQUE. The CSR you use must be generated for your domain.

What information is in a CSR? Here's an example of the info asked for while generating your CSR.

Field
Explanation Example
Common Name The fully qualified domain name for your web server. This must be an exact match. If you intend to secure the URL https://www.geotrust.com, then your CSR's common name must be www.geotrust.com
Organization The exact legal name of your organization. Do not abbreviate your organization name. GeoTrust
Organization Unit Section of the organization Marketing
City or Locality The city where your organization is legally located. Wellesley Hills
State or Province The state or province where your organization is legally located. Can not be abbreviated. Massachusetts
Country The two-letter ISO abbreviation for your country. US

The information is then used to generate a CSR. The final result will look something like this:

How you generate your CSR depends on the type of web server your domain is hosted on. CSR generation instructions for your specific server can be found here.

How do I create a certificate-signing request?
See: certificate-signing request generation (CSR) instructions.

How do I install my QuickSSL certificate?
See: QuickSSL installation instructions.

What forms of payment do you accept.

We currently accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. We can also take your personal check and we also accept e-gold (at an adjusted premium to cover conversion). To pay with a check or by e-gold, please email ssl@nethostspace.com for immediate assistance.

What happens after I place an order?

You will receive an email confirming your order.
An email will be sent to the domain approver email address with a link that will allow you to verify the order.
Your SSL certificate will be sent to you via email along with instructions. The whole process takes about 10 minutes from the time the order request is received.
Install certificate.

What is the "domain approver email" and why is it important?

In order for GeoTrust to issue a security certificate to you, we must verify that the administrator of the domain (most likely you) approve of the request to issue the certificate.

This is done by sending an email to one of the email addresses associated with the domain listed in the WHOIS database. You should make sure a valid email address that you can respond to exists for your domain before you place an order.

When you place your order we will query the WHOIS database and give you a choice as to who the approver email should be sent to.

To find out the email addresses associated with your domain visit: http://www.internic.net/whois.html.

Can I get a refund once my certificate has been issued?
Yes. GeoTrust will replace, revoke, and refund certificates that have been issued within seven (7) days of the certificate issue date as long as they are for the same domain. If you order a certificate and decide you no longer want it within seven days of the issue date, your money will be refunded.
